What is a bridge bearing?                                                                                                                                                          A bridge bearing is a product widely used in bridge construction to provide excellent absorption and transfer of external forces from the superstructure to the foundations. Meanwhile, it allows for stable rotations in any axis and horizontal sliding movements to reduce the forces upon bridges and buildings. Bridge bearings are not only used in bridge construction, but also can be applied to highways, roads, docks, airports, buildings and OTHER applications where large and heavy objects need to operate safely. Not only do these embedded steel plates limit excessive expansions, but also increase transversal, longitudinal and compressive strength as well as rotation capability comparing with plain elastomeric bearings. Applications: bridges with small displacements and short span, load bearings of building structures, flyovers. PTFE bearing pad is the dimpled PTFE sheet bonded to the laminated bearing pad for structure friction coefficient reduction and displacement capacity improvement. It provides a sliding surface for expansion accommodation, the elasticity of the bearing pad is high enough to suit the rotation of beam end, and also the shear deformation is efficient to cope with the horizontal of the superstructure. Applications: bridges with large spans, continuous spans, simply supported beam, continuous plate structures or large displacements,Support structures requiring less vertical but more horizontal weight. Lead core bearing consists of the laminated bearing, top and bottom connecting plates, and lead plug in the middle of the bearing which assists the bearing to absorb earthquake generated forces and extend the structure vibration period. Lead core bearing pad is a isolation device used in bridges or buildings, which can dissipated the energy and decrease the displacement during the horizontal deformation. There are round and rectangular shapes introduced as followed, it is a practical and cost effective choice for earthquake isolation. Applications: Lead core bearing pad is widely used in bridges, viaducts, stadiums, buildings and so on, it provide excellent protection against the damage of earthquake.   High damping rubber bearing, also known as HDR, has very similar appearance to lead rubber bearings, but they are totally different in nature. High damping rubber bearing is composed of special rubber with excellent damping attribute, sandwiched together with layers of steel without any lead plugs. It has high damping value which can effectively absorb seismic energy to reduce seismic response in the earthquake. As the lead core bearing pad, it belongs to the seismic isolation bearing.
Applications: The function is similar to the lead bearing , but it has a smaller size, a simpler structure and a lower cost. Besides it is belongs to environmentally-friendly products without lead in it. Pot Bearing with Elastomeric Bearing Pad fitted inside of steel plate, is the widest used type for transferring vertical or horizontal loads from superstructure to the pier as well as allowing rotations on any axis. Meanwhile, it’s capable to accommodate horizontal displacements of superstructure taking advantages of the reduced friction coefficient between stainless steel panels and a layer of PTFE.
Applications: incrementally launched bridges, curved or skewed bridges, structures with rotations in various directions, structures using the incremental launching methods. Spherical bearing pad is formed by top steel plate, stainless steel slide, PTFE slide, convex plate, curved PTFE and concave plate. The sliding of convex plate and concave plate can accommodate the structural rotations of the beam end. It allows rotation in any direction, it transferring and reacting force on concrete pier through spherical surface but there have no contraction of force occur. Because of the convex curved element and PTFE sheet, the bearing can facilitate rotation about every axis and movements in any direction.
